In the 1930s Swiss scientist Albert Hofmann accidentally discovered LSD. Years later, it was the most studied psychoactive drug in history, but it was also a leading cause of young people ending up in the emergency room. Concern that psychedelics could cause serious harm led Congress to ban it in 1971.
