The world of automotive industry has experienced plenty of developments during the past decade, ranging from voice-activated GPS to electric cars – and the advancements doesn’t stop there. Scientists from Stanford University achieved another milestone when they discovered how to wirelessly transmit electricity to a moving item nearby.
Seamless Charging on the Go
Remember when you were first impressed by the benefits of owning an electric car? Well, you will be more astounded now that a team of scientists revealed that you can finally charge your electric car and drive to your destination at the same time. This would probably reduce its cost and remove worries about the range, possibly favoring electricity as the standard fuel for automobiles (eventually).
Besides developments in wireless charging of devices and vehicles, this technology could possibly lead to wireless robots in manufacturing. Although, the senior author of the research and professor of electrical engineering named Shanhui Fan mentioned that they would still have to considerably increase the level of electricity transmitted to charge these electric cars.
The Astonishing Process
The research team manufactured using already-existing technology that was primarily created at MIT in 2007. It aimed to wirelessly transmit electricity to an immobile item a few feet away. In their new discovery, they were able to wirelessly transmit electricity to a LED lightbulb that was moving. Their display only included a one milliwatt charge even though electric cars typically need tens of kilowatts to operate.
Don’t fret, though. They are currently working on significantly increasing the level of electricity that it could transfer. They are even improving the system to enhance its efficiency and lengthen transfer distance. Sometime soon, you’ll be able to take that road trip with your friends without having to worry about your charging your electric car’s batteries.
